CLEANING PROCEDURES FOR HONEYWELL MILLER® BRAND BELTS, HARNESSES, AND LANYARDS

Spot Clean

To spot clean Honeywell Miller® belts, harnesses, and webbed lanyards, we recommend using a damp sponge or cloth along with a mild detergent that does not include bleach. 

Complete Wash

To wash Honeywell Miller belts, harnesses, and webbed lanyards in a commercial washing machine, we recommend the following procedure:

• A. Place products to be cleaned in mesh laundry bags to reduce the chances of abrasion, snagging, and entanglement that could cause damage to stitching or labels.
• B. Wash in cold or warm water that does not exceed 135°F (57°C).
• C. Use a mild soap or detergent that does not include bleach.
• D. Wash on a regular wash and rinse cycle.
• E. Remove items from mesh bags and hang freely to dry away from excessive heat, steam, or long periods of direct sunlight. Do not machine dry! 

Inspect products thoroughly before returning to service. See our Product Inspection Guide for reference.

Note: Machine washing may cause fading and softening of the webbing and may reduce the useful service life of the product. Be sure to inspect your washed products thoroughly before use.

We do not recommend that workers share Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). It is recommended that each employee be provided their own set of PPE. Most equipment is fitted specifically for certain individuals and it is best if protection equipment is inspected before every use.

The risk of falling is a key concept to master when working at height. In this context, calculating the clearance for each specific work situation is vital to worksite safety. See below for the criteria required to calculate the clearance, and how to optimize it.

What is clearance?

Clearance is the minimum amount of clear space below the user that prevents the user from hitting an obstacle in case of a fall.
This minimum amount of clear space takes into account the length of the system, the tearing of the energy absorber, an average distance between the harness attachment point and the worker's feet (1.5 m) and a safety margin required by the standard (1 m).

The clearance value varies depending on the work situation. The operator’s position relative to the anchor, the length of the system and the operator’s weight are the main factors in its determination.

The role of the anchor’s position

To reduce the clearance, it is necessary to limit the tearing of the energy absorber. The tearing depends on the amount of energy to be absorbed, thus the length of the fall. In the field, it is advisable to always stay as far below the anchor as possible. If the situation requires the use of an anchor located below the user, choosing a lanyard that is as short as possible helps limit the potential fall distance.

BELOW THE ANCHOR

The operator is below the anchor and the ABSORBICA lanyard is nearly taut. Clearance is reduced as the fall distance is low.

AT ANCHOR LEVEL

The anchor is at or slightly above the harness attachment point. If the operator falls, the fall distance is greater. So the clearance is greater.

ABOVE THE ANCHOR

The anchor is at or below the operator's feet. If the operator falls, the fall distance is twice the lanyard length and results in greater tearing of the absorber. The clearance is thus even higher than in the two preceding cases.

Optimize the system length

The total system length (connectors + absorber + lanyard) determines the maximum fall distance and thus affects the clearance value. The choice of lanyard model can be adapted to each workstation, keeping in mind that choosing a lanyard that is as short as possible reduces the potential fall distance. The ABSORBICA VARIO lanyard is best for situations where it is necessary to adjust the length of your system.

Weight: an important factor

Arresting the fall of a heavier user (with his/her equipment) means more energy that needs to be absorbed, so the absorber tear length is greater, which affects the clearance value. In fact, two operators placed in the same location relative to the anchor point but who differ in weight will have different clearances.

Are there other factors that can affect my clearance?

Certain anchors can increase the potential fall distance (flexible lifeline, slanted anchor...)
The deployment of the fall-arrest attachment point on certain harnesses must also be considered in your clearance calculations.

Is the clearance calculator useful for other products?

No, this clearance calculator is applicable only to the current Petzl ABSORBICA line. (Products: L011AA00, L012AA00, L012CA00, L012BA00, L013AA01, L014AA01, L014CA01, L014BA01, L016AA00, L015BA00, L015AA00, L010AA00.)

Can I remove the energy absorber to reduce the potential fall distance?

No, the energy absorber helps reduce the impact force in case of a fall. Using a lanyard alone is a work positioning system and not a fall arrest system.

How are CPS and rebate programs going to be managed?

The standard price per respirator and contract price arrangements per respirator remain unchanged regardless of the packaging.

What does this mean with our existing orders for 9320A+ and 9322A+ in the system / When will we be supplied with those orders / When current boxes run out what happens to back orders?

Stock delivered in June will have the standard box packaging. From July onwards, stock will be delivered in bulk packs.

An email from the distributor confirming willingness to receive the new codes instead of the old codes would suffice to update backorders.

Alternatively, the backorders with old codes can be cancelled, and new orders can be placed using the new codes.

Are all the back orders going to be consolidated and then shipped in new volumes?

For orders that would be supplied with 9320A+ or 9322A+ from July onwards, yes this can be done, provided the distributor confirms via email their willingness to receive the new codes

What happens to distributors who have their end users wanting less than case quantities of 9322A+ or volumes that are not a multiple of 200 units?

The intention behind bulk packing is to increase productivity and release orders faster. However, this comes at a cost of ordering by the case unfortunately.

How do distributors sell this product in less than carton QTY do they have the fitting instructions etc. on the packaging?

According to the TGA they cannot be sold loose either by 3M Au or by 3M authorised distributors.

Can distributors repackage into smaller volumes?

Yes

Can distributors sell individual masks?

As per TGA, neither 3M Australia nor 3M distributors would be able to sell individual units unless it comes with user instructions, 3M sponsor details, the required intended use, the product cat code, lot number and expiry.

Do you have any indication if this will be a permanent change considering the communication state effective July?

No changes until further notice

To help slow the increase in transmission of coronavirus, people living in and visiting metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire are required to wear a face covering whenever they leave home. If you live outside metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire – we recommend you wear a face covering when it’s difficult to keep 1.5 metres apart from others.

Face coverings provide an additional barrier to coronavirus.

The types of face coverings available include cloth masks and single-use face masks – commonly called surgical masks.

I recommend wearing a cloth face covering made of three layers of a mix of breathable fabrics to allow adequate protection. It doesn’t need to be medical quality to be effective. Cloth face coverings can be washed and reused.

Cloth face coverings are also inexpensive, simple to make and easy to use. You can buy a cloth face covering or single-use masks from shops, including chemists and hardware stores, or you can follow our instructions on how to make your own cloth face covering. If a face mask is not available other forms of face covering may be used such as a scarf or bandana.

Make sure your face covering does not have holes or a valve. This can result in breathing out the virus if you have coronavirus.

Of course, when you are eating or drinking you can remove your face covering. If you are running or cycling you can remove your face covering if it makes breathing difficult - but please, have it with you to put on once you have finished.

When it comes to those aged 3 to 12, families should make their own decisions about whether their children should wear a face covering.

But little ones – those two and under – should never wear a mask.

We also need to remember: a face covering on its own is not enough to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Protect yourself, your family and the community by maintaining a physical distance of 1.5 metres from others, washing or sanitising your hands regularly,coughing or sneezing into a tissue or your elbow; and If you are unwell, you must get tested then stay home.

Remember, if you are in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire always wear your face covering when leaving home.

On March 15th, the European Union introduced export authorization requirements for exports of certain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) outside of the European Union in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The regulation is (EU) 2020/402 and is initially effective for a six-week period but could be extended. This regulation will be enacted by each country’s customs authority which will establish a process for receiving export licenses from EU to other countries.

This new regulation will likely impact 3M’s ability to supply certain Personal Protective Equipment sourced from our manufacturing operations in the European Union to customers in non-European Union countries.

[Please note that 3M Australia & 3M New Zealand have multiple sources of supply and therefore not all products from these categories will be impacted by the regulation].

This regulation affects the following PPE Categories from 3M:

• Filtering Facepiece Respirators
• Reusable Respirators
• Powered and Supplied Air Respirators
• Head and Face Protection
• Hearing Protection
• Protective Communications

This decision by the European Union will impact 3M’s ability to deliver these products until the regulation expires, an export authorization is granted, or the products are removed from the affected list. We are looking at other supply options where possible, but in many cases this will not be feasible. For certain applications, alternative products may be suitable. Our Application Engineering team via the 3M Tech Assist line at 1800 024 464 can assist you in your evaluation of such alternatives.

Difference between a directive and a regulation

A regulation is a Community law that applies to all member states in the European Union. It is directly applicable as written. A directive must be implemented by the member state itself. In other words, it is transcribed. This means that the state is free to choose the means by which it will implement the law. It must implement the directive by a certain deadline.

What is the purpose of the CE marking?

The CE marking reflects the manufacturer's commitment to comply with European legislation and is mandatory for placing a product on the common market. It does not mean that the product comes from the European Union. It allows the product to be marketed and sold anywhere within the EU.

How do PPE manufacturers obtain the right to place the CE marking on their products?

To obtain a CE marking, PPE are required to meet the essential health and safety requirements of EU regulation 2016/425.
These requirements cover such aspects of the product as ergonomics, comfort, safety, weight, and strength, although they do not provide any specific values. Only the various ‘harmonized’ standards define with greater precision any construction and performance requirements, as well as the information/markings that must accompany the product. Each standard covers a well-defined field of application.

A harmonized standard is a standard that can provide a presumption of conformity with the essential health and safety requirements of EU regulation 2016/425.

There are two cases for PPE:

CASE 1

PPE with a field of application that is covered by one or more existing harmonized standards.

CASE 2

PPE with characteristics or a field of application not covered by any standard.

In both cases, the manufacturer engages an independent notified body to conduct an EU type assessment. It is this assessment that provides authorization to use the CE marking.

What is an EU type assessment?

The EU type assessment is the part of the conformity evaluation procedure where a notified body assesses the PPE 's technical design to verify and attest that it meets the requirements for all current applicable regulations.

CASE 1

The PPE meets existing standards.

The EU type assessment is based on compliance with the standards requirements the product claims to meet.

 
AVAO BOD FAST international version:
Fall arrest, work positioning, and suspension harness (EN 361, EN 358, EN 813).

ZIGZAG: mechanical Prusik for tree care.

There is no existing standard that covers a device like the ZIGZAG. The ZIGZAG’s functions simultaneously address the standards for rope clamps and for descenders, with the specificity of using a doubled rope.

These devices are covered by EN standard 12841, which defines three types:

• Type A for backup belay devices,
• Type B for rope clamps,
• Type C for descenders.

To approve the ZIGZAG, the notified body in charge of certification decided to use the most relevant test protocols for types B and C as defined by this standard.

Anyone who works in potentially explosive environments must pay attention to safety when working with electronic devices.

The new International version of the Petzl ASTRO Bod Fast harness will be available from our stores from October 2019. There are a number of differences between the International and the Australian versions. We've collated the relevant information and have highlighted the differences:

Differences between the Petzl ASTRO International and Australian versions

Releasable shoulder buckle and lanyard parking points

• The addition of the releasable shoulder buckle on the International version of the Petzl ASTRO is a useful addition
• The doubleback buckle on the right-hand side (while wearing) is different to the Australian version
• Lanyard parking points have been included; a parked lanyard connector will release with a 5kg force (0.05kN)

Fall indicator on dorsal attachment point

The International version of the Petzl ASTRO includes a fall indicator on the dorsal attachment point which means it conforms to the relevant ANSI Standard.

Ventral attachment point

The Australian version of the Petzl ASTRO ventral attachment point cannot be used on the International version, again, because of the AU/NZS Standards. The International version does not therefore offer the facility to captivate progress lanyards on the central bar of the ventral attachment point. It does however still offer the ability to connect the Petzl PODIUM to the ends of the bar, using either the shackle accessories (C087AA00) or using two Petzl Sm’D’s (M39ATL)

Lateral attachment points

• The two lateral attachment points are conventional metal construction (rather than the plastic inserts of the Australian version)
• This means they can be folded back out of the way when not in use

The doubleback waist-belt buckles are different to the Australian version.

Wider webbing from the leg loops to the waist-belt

The webbing from the leg loops to the waist-belt is wider than the Australian version because the webbing needs to be folded in order to fit onto the central bar of the ventral attachment point.

Leg loop buckles

Again, to comply with ANSI Standards, the leg loop FAST buckles are different to the Australian FAST-LT buckles.

Simplifying the ASAP line

Through 2019, there were two ASAP models, one only CE certified and sold with an OK TL, and the other both CE and ANSI certified and sold with an OXAN TL.

Starting in June 2019, the two models will merge into one and be sold without a connector.

The ASAP is still compatible with the OK TL (M33A TL) and OXAN TLA (M72A TLA) connectors.
The ASAP LOCK remains unchanged.

Simplifying the ASAP’SORBER line

Through June 2019, the ASAP’SORBER line included five models:

• The ASAP’SORBER 20 and 40, both EN 355 certified,
• The ASAP’SORBER 20 and 40 international version, both ANSI Z359.13 certified, and also EN 12841 and EN 353-2 certified when part of the ASAP and ASAP LOCK systems.
• ASAP’SORBER AXESS, ANSI Z359.13 certified, and also EN 12841 and EN 353-2 certified when part of the ASAP and ASAP LOCK systems.

Starting in July 2019, the line will include just three models, making certification much easier to understand: 

• The ASAP’SORBER 20 and 40 (physically identical to the prior international version),
• The ASAP’SORBER AXESS (physically identical to the prior international version). 

Both are EN 355 and ANSI Z359.13 certified.
The ASAP’SORBER AXESS remains the only model designed specifically for rescue with a capacity up to 250kg. The CAPTIV is no longer delivered with the ASAP’SORBER. Please note: for compliance with ANSI Z359.13, you need to use the CAPTIV. 

The old ASAP and ASAP LOCK models are compatible with the ASAP’SORBER that will be sold starting in July 2019. However, when used together, the system will not be certified.

Adding the Bm’D to ASAP compatibility as part of ANSI Z359.15

In addition to the OXAN TLA, the Bm’D TLU can now be used with the ASAP in compliance with ANSI Z359.15 certification.

New ASAP’AXIS rope compatible with the ASAP and ASAP LOCK as part of EN 353-2

The new PPE regulation requires manufacturers to ensure that their products comply with the change in standards. This is the case for EN 353-2, which now requires more stringent testing: all fall-arrest devices used with a detachable energy absorber, like the ASAP, need to pass the tests with or without an energy absorber (impact force < 6kN).

Petzl therefore decided to develop a rope with an integrated energy absorber on the end that is clipped to the anchor: the ASAP'AXIS.

The ASAP'AXIS can be used with an ASAP’SORBER energy absorber on the ASAP and ASAP LOCK.

ASAP EN 353-2 certification

Only the ASAP’AXIS rope is compatible with the ASAP as part of EN 353-2.

ASAP LOCK EN 353-2 certification

Like other Petzl semi-static ropes, the ASAP’AXIS is EN1891 certified. It can theoretically be used with descenders such as the I’D or RIG, and rope clamps like the ASCENSION or BASIC… However, for this type of use a high impact fall may activate the energy absorber, requiring the rope to be prematurely retired.
